UVA vs UVB Rays
Time for a brief sun-science lesson! The first step in maintaining your winter SPF routine is learning exactly why you need to continue to lather on sunscreen each and every day.
Even in the winter months when the sun does not feel as strong, it is still emitting ultraviolet rays which can harm your skin. There are two main types of UV rays; UVA and UVB. UVA rays reach deeper into the dermis of the skin and are the primary rays responsible for aging, wrinkling and skin cancer. UVB rays can still cause skin cancer but penetrate only the epidermis of the skin and are primarily responsible for sunburns. A handy trick to remember the difference between the two is when hearing UVA think aging, UVB think burning! Regardless of UVA or UVB, both rays still radiate through clouds, so make sure you are applying SPF daily, even if you can’t see the sun.
